Made for the Brackeys Game Jam 2020.1

Theme: Holes

Controls: Arrows, Z, X, C (Movement, Jump, Catch/Release, Switch Net)

You are Greg. Greg is a bug catcher. Greg likes to catch bugs.

One day, Greg was out catching butterflies until he stumbles upon a suspicious well which then asks Greg for his butterfly. When Greg gives the well the butterfly, the well swallows it up, but then asks for more sacrifices. Greg now knows what he must do; with his net in hand, he enters into the deep depths of the dungeon.

Nets have holes, wells have holes... bit of a stretch but close enough.

Tips for the boss:

  • Focus on hitting the dragon with your net during the first phase whenever its not charging up its attack (you can tell when its charging its attack if you pay close enough attention)
  • You can catch its fireballs with your net and hit it back towards the dragon to deal 3 points of damage!
  • During the second phase, the dragon won't try to directly attack you, so focus on catching/dodging its fireballs and release them back at the dragon (no need for aiming because they are homing fireballs)
  • Hitting the final blow with your net and catching the dragon in its second phase will refill your health, so don't worry about taking damage when going for the final blow! (unless you only have 1 heart left)
  • In some situations, if a fireball is coming right at you and you have a fireball in your net, you can throw your fireball at it and they will hit each other

I BEAT THE BOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The graphics are cute and appropriate and the gameplay and level design are good. However, it's a little grindy (lots of going back and forth through the same few screens to earn money) and the boss fight is a HUGE jump in difficulty. I gave up and didn't bother finishing, although unlike Egg2Oof, my count was only in the low double digits.

This game is far too hard and the boss fight is crap. I have tried 274 times (tallied on paper) to pass the first and second part combined and I keep dying on the boss fight aka Just Impossible. Yes, the boss fight is impossible with all the boosts. The entire game is far too difficult for anybody to play.  However, I will give a compliment to soften my criticism: The concept is good and so is the game when you don't keep dying.

Edit: Sorry, the boss fight is actually goddamn unplayable.

find the rhythm, hit him 1, 2, 3, then jump over him, hit him 1, 2, 3, jump over him and catch the second fireball mid air, hit him 1,2,3 etc. once he gets to the second stage, move in a figure 8 pattern, jump up and catch his fire ball, land on the ground, jump up and throw the fireball back at him. also in the first phase if you're not sure when he's going to shoot he will do a little animation like hes squeezing down, he will do that then shoot.

The game is fun, but the boss fight is just too difficult. I can manage to get to the second phase with about 3-4 hearts, but it just get frustrating. There is also a really long pause at the start of the boss fight, maybe you can decrease that a bit. Perhaps also better clearify that the player should really get all of the damage and health upgrades to even stand a chance.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely take this into account if I ever decide to update the game!

thats kind of obvious though, like if you dont last a second to the boss and you're dealing tiny amounts of damage you would think to go back and upgrade your stuff.
